Installing Oracle 10g Developer Suite on Windows XP

The following outline describes the steps required to install Oracle10g Developer Suite on the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

Checklist

Before you even start this process you should have:

A Pentium III or Pentium 4 based PC with at least 800 MHz processor, 256 MB of RAM (512 is much better) and at least 10 Gigabytes of free disk space.
If you only have 256 MB of RAM, make sure you have Windows manage at least 400 MB swap file (virtual memory).
This machine MUST be running Windows 2000 with service pack 1 or (preferably) 3 installed. If you are running MS IIS, disable the web server (running on Port 80 by default) before starting the Oracle 10g Developer Suite installation.
At least 5 GB of free disk space:

·                   Space to source ZIP files:  836 MB

·                   Space to unpack source ZIP files: 958 MB

·                   Space to install Oracle Developer Suite10g Software: 910 MB

The Installation Process

As with most Windows installation programs, inserting the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive automatically executes the setup program. (If this does not happen, use the Windows Explorer to view the contents of your CD-ROM drive and double click on the "setup" program there).

If you downloaded the Oracle10g from Oracle Technet, then you need to unzip the files into a two temporary directories (Disk1 and Disk2) and double click on the setup.exe program in the Disk1 directory) to get the installation process started.

If you place a CD in the CD-ROM drive, the following Welcome window will appear:

Click on the "Install Oracle10gDS Option". This will launch the Oracle Universal Installer.

Note: If you have installed previous Oracle10g or Oracle9i products on this machine, a previous Oracle Universal Installer should have created an Oracle Inventory. If this is the case, then the Universal Installer will find the Oracle Inventory and move along to the next step below (File Locations Screen).

However, if this is a fresh install of ANY Oracle products, then you will be prompted to create a new Oracle Inventory. The default is to place this in C:\Program Files\Oracle\
I strongly recommend you follow the defaults for this step since other Oracle tools will look to that location by default for information on what has been installed.

Once the Universal Installer finds or created an Oracle Inventory, the File Locations Screen should appear.

Click on the Next button to move to the File Locations screen as shown below:

In this screen, the Source and Destination locations must be selected.

The Source path should reflect either your CD-ROM or the directory in which you unzipped the source files. Leave this as the default.

For the Destination, it is recommended that you create a new Oracle Home. If you have other Oracle10g products (such as the Oracle9i Database or a previous version of JDeveloper) already installed, that Oracle Home will appear by default. Override this default with a new Oralce Home called 10gDSHome. Choose a hard disk drive that has at least 5 gigabytes of free space. In the example here, we are using the C: drive.

For this example, we used the D:\Oracle\10gDSHome as the home directory.

Click on the Next button to load the Product information. This may take up to 2 minutes (depending on the speed of your machine). Once the product information has been read, the following 4 Installation Types are presented:

The four types are:

J2EE Development: Uses JDeveloper with Oralce's "Oracle Containers for Java" (OC4J) Java code to create Java 2 Enterprise Edition applications.
Business Intelligence: Includes the Warehouse builder, Discoverer tools (OLAP client) and Clickstream Intelligence Builder along with the core OC4J code. (No forms development software or CASE tools are included)
Rapid Application Development: CASE tools (Designer), Forms and Reports development tools, JDeveloper and OC4J.
Complete: Installs all of the above.

For this installation, we chose the complete installation. Click on the Next button.

Oracle Reports can be distributed using an SMTP mail relay. If you have your outgoing e-mail handler handy, put in its host name or IP address. If not, it is OK to leave this blank as you can fill it in later. Click on the Next button.

At this point, the installer has everything it needs. Click on the "Install" button to start the install.

If you are installing from CD's, you will be prompted to insert the next CD. If you are installing from a local file system, the installer may find the files automatically. In case it does not, you'll need to point it to where Disk2 is located.

You may also notice that 1 or 2 Windows Command Prompts (cmd.exe) will open up. These are commands that are unpacking files. Do not close these. The installer will close them automatically once they have completed.

After some time, the installation should be complete:

Click on the "Exit" button to exit the Oracle Universal Installer. Note that two new menus will be added to your Start->Programs menu. One menu group will be for the new Oracle Home you have created (Oracle - 10gDSHome in this case) and the Oracle10g Developer Suite menu group.

If you will be connecting to a remote Oracle database (over a network), then you will need to configure Oracle Net8. Gather the settings about the Oracle server such as host name, IP address, Oracle Service Name and/or SID and port number (1521 is the usual default). Run the Net Configuration Assistant in the Programs -> Oracle - 10gDSHome -> Configuration and Migration Tools folder.

Before running a form or a report you have created, you will need to run the OC4J service. By default, this runs on port 8888 on your local machine. If you have any other servers using that port, you will have to change the OC4J's default port.

Another step you will need to take (although it can be handled automatically), is to install Oralce's JInititor. Look for a file called jinit.exe in your 10gDS Home (under directory jinit). Jinit is a plugin Java runtime environment for MS IE and Netscape. It needs to be installed before you can view any forms or reports.

Tips

· Run the Forms Builder

Look for this file "tnsnames.ora" which exist in admin of the database directory... for example

D:\oracle\ora92\network\admin

Copy this file and paste it in the admin of developer directory (replace the existing one)... for example

D:\oracle\10gDSHome\network\ADMIN

· Run the Forms Builder without typing @ [Global Database Name]

Run --> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE

Expand ALL_HOMES you will find ID0 AND ID1

Right click on ID0-->New-->Sting Value-->

rename the string value to LOCAL.. and double click on it to modify the Value Data

To orcl (The Global Database Name)

Make this steps again to this values

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\ALL_HOMES\ID1,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0 and

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME1.

Which this values are the database and developer home and its needed just when you install developer 10g on database 9i

(Deferent version of developer or database)

· Run the form outside the explorer

Look for this file "formsweb.cfg" for example

D:\oracle\10gDSHome\forms90\server\formsweb.cfg

**MAKE a BACKUP**

Open it then look for this line "separateFrame"

chang it from separateFrame=false --> separateFrame=true

Save and exit
